Robert Edward Hall
1924 – 2023
Millbrook, New York
Robert Edward Hall was born on March 14, 1924, in a clapboard house on Franklin Avenue in Millbrook, New York — a village of fewer than two thousand people in the Hudson Valley, where the Halls had lived for three generations.
He was the second of four children born to Edward James Hall, a dairy farmer, and Margaret Louise Hall (née Brennan), a schoolteacher who had emigrated from County Cork, Ireland, in 1910. By all accounts, it was Margaret who gave Robert his love of reading and his habit of remembering names — a trait that would come to define him.
Robert attended Millbrook Central School, where he played on the baseball team and graduated in the class of 1942 — a class already diminished by the war that had begun reshaping all of their futures. Within six months, he enlisted in the United States Army at the recruiting station in Poughkeepsie. His enlistment record lists his occupation simply as "farmer."
He was assigned to the 77th Infantry Division — the "Statue of Liberty" division — and deployed to the Pacific Theater in the spring of 1944. The 77th saw some of the fiercest combat of the war. Robert served through the battles of Guam, Leyte, and Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service.
He rarely spoke of the war afterward. His daughter, Patricia, would later recall that the only story he ever told was about a stray dog that followed his platoon for three weeks on Guam — and how they had to leave it behind when they shipped out.
Robert returned to Millbrook in January 1946 and married Dorothy Jean Kessler on June 8 of that year at Grace Episcopal Church. Dorothy, the daughter of a local pharmacist, had written to Robert throughout the war — a correspondence that filled two shoeboxes, according to the family, though only a handful of letters survive.
He took a position as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service in 1947, beginning a career that would span three decades. In 1958, the Millbrook Round Table reported that Robert E. Hall had been appointed postmaster, succeeding the retiring Harold Simmons. The article noted that he was "well-known and well-liked in the community."
As postmaster, Robert became one of the most visible figures in the village. In a small town, the post office was more than a government building — it was a daily gathering place. Former residents recall that Robert knew every family on every route, remembered the names of their children, and kept a jar of butterscotch candies on the counter that he refilled every Monday morning.
Robert and Dorothy raised three children: Edward Robert, Patricia Ann, and James Michael. The family lived in the same house on Elm Street for over fifty years — a white Colonial that Robert maintained with the same quiet discipline he brought to everything.
He retired from the Postal Service in 1986 after thirty-nine years, including twenty-eight as postmaster. In retirement, he served on the Millbrook Library Board, tended a vegetable garden that supplied half the block, and could be found most mornings at the Millbrook Diner, where he occupied the same booth for so many years that the waitstaff eventually put a small brass plate on it after his passing.
Dorothy preceded him in death in 2017, after sixty-one years of marriage. Robert Edward Hall died on October 7, 2023, at the age of ninety-nine, in the house on Elm Street where he had lived since 1948. He was buried with military honors at Millbrook Cemetery, beside Dorothy, beneath a stone that reads simply: Together Again.
He is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren — and by the memory of a town that knew him as the man behind the counter who never forgot a name.
