Loraine Alice Patron

1931 – 2026

Ely, Minnesota

Loraine Alice Patron passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 95, surrounded by her loving family in her cherished home. Born on March 24, 1931, in Ely, Minnesota, to Eino and Tyyne Lempia, Loraine embodied grace, kindness, and unwavering faith throughout her remarkable ninety-five-year journey.

Her early life was rooted in Minnesota's Iron Range, where her Finnish immigrant parents had settled as part of the wave of immigrants who came to work in the region's iron mines. The Lempia family represented the Finnish community that formed one of the largest ethnic groups on the Iron Range by 1920, drawn by mining opportunities and a landscape that reminded them of their homeland.

Loraine completed her education at Hibbing High School, graduating in 1949. The school served as a regional educational center, and her graduation year placed her among the cohort of young people coming of age as America transitioned from World War II to the Cold War era.

Her early adult years were marked by both love and profound loss. She married Brookhart E. Gave, a young man born in 1926. Their union produced a daughter, Barbra Gave, but their happiness was cut short when Brookhart was deployed to Korea during the Korean War. Serving as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, Brookhart died on January 14, 1951, in Seoul, Korea, at the age of 24. This loss transformed Loraine into a Gold Star Wife, a designation that would influence her community service for decades to come.

In July 1952, approximately eighteen months after her first husband's death, Loraine found love again and married George W. Patron. This second marriage proved enduring and fruitful, lasting twenty years until George's passing in September 1972. Together, they expanded their family with daughters LeRayne Paul, Gail Brunette, Georgine Kosior, and Sally Patron-Espana, as well as son Scott Patron.

Professionally, Loraine dedicated herself to her work at Tuffy's Pet Foods, a family-owned company founded in 1964 in Perham, Minnesota, by Darrell "Tuffy" Nelson and his son Ken. The company, which began as a small pet food manufacturer and grew into part of the multi-generational KLN Family Brands, represented the kind of stable, family-oriented workplace where Loraine could build a career. Her dedication to the company was noted by all who knew her work ethic.

Beyond her professional life, Loraine's commitment to veterans' causes remained steadfast throughout her life. Her membership in the Ladies Auxiliary VFW #3289 in New York Mills, Minnesota, reflected her enduring connection to the military community and her desire to honor the sacrifice her first husband had made. The VFW Auxiliary, which has served veterans, service members, and their families for over 100 years, provided Loraine with a meaningful way to channel her personal experience of loss into service for others.

Loraine's spiritual life was equally significant. As a devoted member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in East Bethel, she was widely known as a "prayer warrior," using her spiritual gifts to uplift those around her. Her faith provided not only personal sustenance but also a way to support her community through intercessory prayer and spiritual encouragement.

One of the more personal aspects of Loraine's character was her enthusiastic support for Minnesota sports teams. She was a devoted fan of the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and University of Minnesota Gophers. This passion for local sports connected her to the broader Minnesota community and reflected her engaged participation in contemporary culture throughout her long life.

Family remained central to Loraine's world throughout her later years. She was blessed to see multiple generations of descendants, including numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy. However, she also faced the profound sorrow of outliving her daughter Barbra Gave, who passed away on November 30, 2024, at the age of 82 in Onamia, Minnesota.

During her final days, Loraine received compassionate care from Interim Healthcare of Twin Cities, allowing her to remain in her beloved home surrounded by family. Her death on March 26, 2026, marked the end of a life well-lived, characterized by resilience in the face of loss, dedication to family and community, and an unwavering faith that sustained her through nearly a century of change.

Loraine's final resting place is at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, Minnesota, the same cemetery where her first husband Brookhart was buried in 1951. This return to Hibbing, where she had completed her high school education and where her adult journey began, represents a poignant completion of her life's circle. Her legacy lives on through her surviving children, their spouses, and the multiple generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward her example of grace, faith, and service to others.
