George A. Caviggia

1949 – 2026

Latrobe, Pennsylvania

George A. Caviggia lived a life anchored in the values of family devotion, community service, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. Born on June 25, 1949, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, George was the son of John A. "Gabo" Caviggia and Helen M. (Poloskey) Caviggia. His father, a World War II veteran who served in the 7th Armored Division in Germany and was held as a prisoner of war, instilled in his four sons the importance of service, resilience, and family bonds. His mother, Helen, born in nearby Derry in 1923, lived to the remarkable age of 99, passing away in July 2022, just years before George's own death.

Growing up in the close-knit Italian-American community of Westmoreland County, George was one of four Caviggia brothers. His brother Richard "Tank" Caviggia, born just a year earlier in 1948, would become his lifelong companion and fellow employee at Latrobe Brewing. Their brother John Dennis achieved the rank of Colonel in military service and retired to Palm Coast, Florida, while Anthony settled in Buena Park, California. The geographic dispersal of the Caviggia brothers across the nation reflected the broader patterns of American family life in the late twentieth century, yet their bonds remained strong throughout their lives.

George's educational journey began in the public schools of Derry Township and culminated with his graduation from Derry Area High School in 1967. Coming of age during the turbulent 1960s, George represented a generation that witnessed profound social change while maintaining traditional values of hard work and family commitment. Following high school, he pursued higher education at Youngstown State University in Ohio, demonstrating his willingness to expand his horizons beyond his immediate geographic area. The university, founded in 1908 and incorporated into Ohio's higher education system in 1967—the very year George graduated high school—provided him with the foundation for his future career.

It was during his high school years that George met Cheryl Joe, who would become his "high school sweetheart" and devoted companion for fifty-five years. Their marriage, which began around 1971, produced two children who would become sources of immense pride: Jordan Caviggia, who established himself as a prominent engineer and Florida practice leader for American Structurepoint, and daughter Cecily, who married Michael Schmitt and remained close to home in Latrobe.

George's professional life reflected the stability and dedication characteristic of his generation. He began his career with the Latrobe Bulletin, a newspaper that had been serving the community for over a century. This early experience in journalism and community communication provided him with deep insights into the life of his hometown. Later, George joined Latrobe Brewing Company, the historic brewery famous for producing Rolling Rock beer, where he would spend the remainder of his career until retirement. His brother Tank also worked at the brewery for 42 years, making Latrobe Brewing a family institution for the Caviggia brothers.

Faith played a central role in George's life through his membership at St. Martin Roman Catholic Church in New Derry. The parish, with roots dating back to 1883, provided spiritual guidance and community connection throughout George's life. His Catholic faith would ultimately provide the framework for his funeral Mass, celebrated by Father Salvatore Lamendola, and his burial in the church cemetery.

Beyond family and faith, George found fellowship through his membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #907 in Latrobe. The Elks organization, with its emphasis on community service and fraternal bonds, provided George with opportunities to serve others and strengthen his connections within the community. His involvement reflected his belief in the importance of civic participation and mutual support.

George's passion for golf made him a familiar figure on the courses around Latrobe, a community with deep golfing traditions connected to Arnold Palmer's legacy. As "an avid golfer," George spent countless hours pursuing his favorite pastime, which provided both recreation and social connection with fellow enthusiasts throughout the region.

Perhaps most significantly, George distinguished himself as a devoted grandfather to five grandchildren: Chase Broderick, Jaxon Caviggia, Alessia, Talia, and Sienna Schmitt. His obituary specifically notes that he was "very involved with his grandchildren always attending school and sporting events," a testament to his commitment to the younger generation and his belief in the importance of family support and encouragement. This dedication to his grandchildren's activities and achievements represented one of the defining characteristics of his later years.

The final chapter of George's life unfolded in New Derry, where he had made his home with Cheryl. On March 31, 2026, after a brief illness, George passed away at age 76, surrounded by his loving family. His death at home, in the presence of those he cherished most, provided dignity and peace to his final moments. The community's response to his passing, evidenced by the arrangements for visitation and his funeral Mass, reflected the respect and affection he had earned throughout his seventy-six years of life.

George A. Caviggia's legacy lives on in his surviving wife Cheryl, his children Jordan and Cecily, his five grandchildren, his brothers John Dennis and Anthony, and the extended network of family and friends who knew him as a devoted family man, loyal friend, and active community member. His life embodied the values of commitment, service, and love that continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
