Born on October 8, 1943, in her grandparents' home in the Union Hill Community of Clay County, Tennessee, Dorothy entered the world as the cherished only child of Edd and Estelle Harp. Her childhood was enriched by the presence of her beloved grandparents—Finis and Leatha Cherry, and Sib and Ollie Harp—who provided the extended family warmth that would shape her own approach to nurturing relationships throughout her life.

Their shared faith provided the foundation for their marriage and family life, creating a home environment centered on Christian values and service to others.

Dorothy and Delton raised three sons together: Anthony "Tony" Ray Doss of Lafayette, Barry Lynn Doss of Lafayette, and Jeffery Wayne Doss of Temperance Hall. As a mother, Dorothy was known for her nurturing care and her ability to create a warm, welcoming home where everyone felt valued and loved. The fact that all three sons remained in the immediate area as adults speaks to the strong family bonds she helped cultivate and the deep roots she and Delton established in their community.

One of the remarkable achievements of Dorothy and Delton's marriage was their dedication to family travel and creating shared memories. Together, they accomplished the ambitious goal of visiting all 50 states, an endeavor that required careful planning, financial commitment, and a spirit of adventure. As a grandmother, Dorothy found great joy in watching her family grow to include six grandchildren: Kinsey Rae Emery, Chelsea Brooke Rose, Katlyn Elizabeth Lawhon, Jacob Chapman Doss, Elijah Riley Doss, and Lydia Mabry Wimsatt. She lived to see several of her grandchildren marry and establish their own families, including Chelsea's marriage to Congressman John Rose and Jacob's marriage to Mary Lane Minatra in 2020. Her great-grandchildren—Asher Emery, Guy Rose, Samuel Rose, Owen Lawhon, Ayla Lawhon, Will Lawhon, and Jase Doss—represented the continuation of the family legacy she had helped build.

The family also experienced the profound sadness of losing great-grandson Mack Rose, a loss that would have deeply affected Dorothy given her strong commitment to family. Through both joys and sorrows, Dorothy remained a steady presence of love and faith for her expanding family network.

In her later years, Dorothy's health necessitated a move to Knollwood Manor in Lafayette, a skilled nursing facility that provided the specialized care she needed while allowing her to remain in her beloved community. The facility's commitment to maintaining a homelike environment aligned with Dorothy's values about dignity and family connection, even during times of physical vulnerability.

Dorothy passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at Knollwood Manor. Her peaceful passing, in the presence of those she loved most, reflected the grace and dignity that had characterized her life. The family's request for memorial contributions to be directed to the Lafayette Church of Christ Youth Group and Macon Helps—a local charitable organization serving Macon County residents—demonstrated Dorothy's enduring commitment to investing in young people and caring for those in need.
